Project Role: Graphic Designer (WACTAC ALUMNI)
The Walker Art Center empowers people to experience the transformative possibilities of the art and ideas of our time and to imagine the world in new ways. In our over 125-year history, we have become one of the most celebrated art museums in the country and we are known for our innovative presentations and acclaimed collections of contemporary art across the spectrum of the visual, performing, and media arts.
The designer will also create the cover design and ensure the overall publication maintains consistent formatting, typography, and visual clarity. This role is well suited for an early-career designer interested in gaining experience in editorial and publication design.
Working with the editorial or project team, the designer will translate submitted materials into a polished layout that is clear, visually engaging, and ready for print or digital distribution.
PROJECT DETAILS
- Hours per week: variable, ranging 10 - 20 (anticipating 100 hours of work over the duration of the project)
- Anticipated Project Duration: May - August
- Core Hours: Flexible, but must be able to make key meetings during a standard work week.
- Work Location: Hybrid
Key Responsibilities
- Design and produce the layout for a magazine or booklet-style publication
- Compile and format multiple submissions (text, images, artwork, and graphics)
- Design the front cover of the publication
- Apply consistent typography, formatting, and page structure
- Maintain clear visual hierarchy and readability throughout the publication
- Prepare print-ready and/or digital-ready files
- Collaborate with the editorial or project team to ensure accuracy and clarity
- Incorporate edits and revisions based on feedback
- Ensure files meet printing specifications or digital distribution standards
- Coordinate communication with printer and ensure project stays within designated budget
Deliverables
- Completed publication layout (magazine/booklet format)
- Publication cover design
- Print-ready files (PDF and/or printer-ready specifications)
- Editable source files (Adobe InDesign)
- Organized file package including linked images and final exports
Qualifications
- WACTAC Alumni
- Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign (required) and familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite
- Basic experience with editorial layout, publication design, or booklet formatting
- Strong attention to typography, spacing, and visual organization
- Ability to manage multiple pieces of content and maintain consistent formatting
- Comfort incorporating feedback and making revisions
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with student publications, literary magazines, zines, or community publications
- Familiarity with preparing files for print production
- Interest in editorial or publication design
Submission Requirements: Interested designers should submit
- Portfolio with examples of layout or publication design
- Optional: short note describing interest in publication or editorial design
JOB SPECIFICATIONS This position is considered part-time, non-exempt. As a non-exempt position, it is eligible for overtime pay. The compensation for this role is $20-23 hourly.
