Art Handler

The Art Handler will serve as a primary handler of works on paper and artist book collections ensuring safety of the objects during a high-volume photographic documentation project.  Pull works from storage locations, transport to photographic studio, place works for photography, return pieces to storage.  Position works on custom mounts and remove/replace frames, as needed, in advance of photography.  Maintain an accurate journal of works that have been photographed and input data to create image records for each photographed piece.  The role will work collaboratively with the project team to capture images of over 6,000 collection works in a 12-month period.


  • Pull/return works from storage locations (30%)
  • Prepare pieces for photography (15%)
  • Transport and handle works for photography (45%)
  • Record keeping/creation (10%)


  • 1 to 3 years art handling experience, inclusive of handling unframed works on paper.
  • Basic knowledge of artwork mediums and museum storage materials and processes.
  • Ability to mount works to simple armatures to achieve optimal positioning for photography
  • General knowledge of museum quality and custom frame removal.
  • Experience using databases, preferably knowledge of Filemaker Pro.


  • Safely handle works in the collection independently.
  • Ask questions or for assistance whenever needed, erring on the side of caution
  • Complete tasks with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Work cooperatively, efficiently, and independently.
  • Take direction and learn on the job.
  • Lift up to 30 lbs unassisted
